Spell check is a feature available in many software applications. You probably have grown up using spell check and grammar check. Are you dependent on spell check to proof your documents? Do you believe that features such as spell check and online calculators are causing our population to be overly dependent on them and unable to spell or calculate without those tools? What effect could this dependence have on the literacy of our society—or does it not matter how these things are checked, as long as the tools are available?
Yes, I am dependent on this software application. I don't necessarily use it cause I can't spell, it's a life saver for me cause it points out my typos. The application itself is very helpful but could have a negative effect on our younger generation and those who are not the best spellers and grammar writers. Because they know this feature is available, the really do not care to learn how to spell or write a complete sentence.
Today people use computers in business, public services, education and, most of all, in entertainment. Almost everything we do and every aspect of our lives is affected by computer's modern technology. That is why in my opinion, computers and other developments of technology are useful and there is no possibility to live without them. It's sad to say, but I think it is the truth.
But even in moving forward it’s still important to hold on to our values. Some advancements make me feel uncomfortable. Like many people I’m also worried that our social skills are deteriorating. I’ve heard of people texting each other when they’re in the same room instead of speaking. So I guess when people say that we’re losing ourselves to technology, I agree to some extent. But I see the benefits as well and I don’t see why there can’t be a balance. If we can respect our past but embrace the future at the same time, I don’t see why we should ever lose who we are.
